The Vice-Speaker, the Chair of the Gender Equality Council Ms. Manana Kobakhidze held the meeting with the Delegation of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Congress of the United Mexican States.

The guests asked about rights of women and gender equality issues in Georgia. The parties discussed cooperation in culture, education and tourism spheres and Parliamentary involvement. Mexican MPs noted that despite the mandatory quotation in Mexico, the both Chambers of the Mexican Parliament contain 50% of female MPs but there are no women in other spheres.

“They were surprised that even in the Parliament and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, women exceed men and that we have the female Chair of the Supreme Court and the half of the lawyers are women. As it seems, they have no female employees in the Courts. Despite of the fact that they have mandatory quotation, it is not the solution and they asked for our experience how we managed to have active women in all the spheres, for instance in Defense when 7% are women in military forces. It was novelty for them”, - M. Kobakhidze noted.

As she stated, the Parliament has only 11% of female MPs, which is a low index. “We spoke about mandatory quotation law, which is not yet adopted though considered. It can change the situation in the Parliament. We exchanged experience and expressed will to enhance inter-Parliamentary cooperation within the Memorandum signed between the Foreign Relations Committees”.

As she noted, Mexican women still actively strive for their rights. “Last year, I attended the World Female MPs Forum in Mexico and delivered the speech. I listened to the Mexican women speaking about their striving for their rights. Their experience is very interesting. They have the problems in education sphere – there are more men in this sphere than women and it is a challenge for them when we have more financed on 20 faculties from the budget and men and women have equal opportunities. Four years ago we started free text-book program for school children which facilitates to saving money for the parents – both male and female. Besides, we have the unique pre-school education with adoption of the new law, which is a step forward for realization of mothers”.

As she noted, the problem related to violence is relevant as in Georgia so in Mexico though with various scales. “Violence against women is acute, especially domestic violence in Mexico. We have the same problem and we have developed the state strategy and the action plan assigning the respective agencies with obligations to overcome the problem”. As she stated, such visits will facilitate to enhancement of cooperation.
