Irakli Kobakhidze: consolidation of Georgian political system is the main challenge

Today, we enjoy the higher level of consolidation in Georgian political system – we closely cooperate with various political parties in the Parliament and it is the constant progress we achieve along with our political partners and other stakeholders of Georgian political system”, - the Speaker, Irakli Kobakhidze stated at the International Conference World in 2018: Upside Down

It is important to unite the political system on national and foreign policy affairs, he noted.

Consolidation of Georgian political system is the main challenge for us. The contradictory elections were held in 2016 between various drastically contradictory political parties. Today, we enjoy the higher level of consolidation in Georgian political system – we closely cooperate with various political parties in the Parliament and it is the constant progress we achieve along with our political partners and other stakeholders of Georgian political system. It is noteworthy that we have adopted the joint resolution on foreign policy priorities of Georgia, which is paramount and was supported by our colleagues from National Movement and European Georgia. We have also adopted the bi-party resolution on Russian Occupation and Otkhozoria-Tatunashvili Act. It was crucial for us to at least echo our joint statement regarding the national and foreign political affairs. It is paramount to stand united in this term. Hence, we are on the right path in terms of consolidation of political system and I personally do my best to facilitate to this process in Georgian Parliament”.

He spoke about pro-Russian parties stating that their impact is being mitigated which is the achievement of the Government.

As to pro-Russian forces represented in the political system, their impact is mitigated. Before and after 2012, their impact in Georgian political system was much higher, which was effectively grounded especially before 2012 during the National Movement as the ruling party. It represented itself as the pro-European party but was routinely committing torture, violation of human rights, business racket etc. It entailed the protest of the part of the society and increased the number of pro-Russian satellites. Now, after 2012 the ruling party is pro-Western and democratic, the situation is improved in terms of pro-Russian forces, which is one of the achievements of the Government. Due to this fact, the number of the supporters of pro-Russian parties was 20% higher in 2013. Today, this index is reduced to 10%, which is thanks to the pro-Western, democratic and consistent policy of the Government”.

Today, the Parliament is stronger and will achieve higher progress guaranteed with the new Constitution.

Today, Parliament is stronger compared to the last 2 years and I agree with my colleague, Giga Bokeria that we shall become even stronger. We will achieve significant progress in upcoming years guaranteed with the new Constitution as it ensures movement of the country to the Parliamentary system with stronger Parliament and stronger opposition. We hold the special guarantees”.

The Speaker mentioned freedom of media as one of the main achievements of the Government and reminded the attendees that the Government had total monopoly over media before 2012.
