Remote Meeting between Chairs of Foreign Relations Committees of Georgian, Azerbaijan and Turkish Parliaments

The subsequent tripartite meeting of the Chairmen of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish Parliaments was held online. Meetings within the framework of such format have been held since 2014. This year it was planned to be held in Tbilisi, which was not accomplished due to the COVID-19.

The meeting was attended by Irakli Beraia, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia; Volkan Bozkir, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey, and Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Interparliamentary Relations of the Milli Mejlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Chairmen of the Committees discussed the current situation in the region, the issues on the agenda of the trilateral relations and the directions of contingent cooperation.

The parties attached a special importance to pandemic situation in all countries and the response measures assumed by the Governments. Cooperation between the three countries in this regard was highly emphasized.

Particular attention was paid to transport-energy projects within the Southern Corridor - the importance of these projects for the economic development of the three countries, as well as for the energy security of these countries and Europe, and the opportunities for strengthening cooperation in this field.

The parties discussed trade-economic, investment and tourism cooperation between the three countries and the special role of this cooperation in the post-crisis period, for the normal functioning and sustainable development of the relevant sectors of the economy of the three strategic partners.

The sides reaffirmed their intact support for Georgia's and Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting the importance of a speedy and peaceful resolution of conflicts in accordance with the principles and norms of international law, in particular the sovereignty of states, territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally recognized borders as is also mentioned in the protocol of Ankara, signed on February 28, 2018 by the Chairmen of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Parliaments of Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. The parties stressed that they do not recognize the illegal so-called elections in the regions of Abkhazia, Tskhinvali and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The importance of the format of the tripartite meetings in terms of cooperation between the three strategic partner countries and its further strengthening was particularly highlighted.

The 6th tripartite meeting of the Chairmen of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish Parliaments will be held in Turkey.
