Spain expresses solidarity to Georgia’s territorial integrity and calls Russia’s recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia’s independence illegal – stated Gustavo Manuel de Arístegui, Chairman of Foreign Relations Committee of Spanish Parliament at the meeting with the parliamentary opposition.

At the meeting the sides discussed Georgia-Spanish relations, Russia’s aggression, existing situation on the occupied territories and internal political condition in the country.

MP George Akhvlediani paid attention to UN and OSCE missions ceasing in Georgia that means to remain Georgian population in the conflict regions face to face Russia’s aggression. “Hence, it is necessary to increase the number of EU missions in the conflict regions”, - stated George Akhvlediani. 

“Georgia had a big lack during the August war. It is necessary not only political, but also economical support”, - noted Arístegui. According to him, many Spanish investors are going to provide investment in Georgia and the only hamper is a political instability for them.

At the sitting there was also considered the internal political condition in the country. MPs discussed the necessity of systems amendments in the country, media and court independence and it was mentioned that the parliamentary opposition supports the systems amendments in the country.

It was stressed that the parliamentary opposition is actively drawn in the working process of the commission on constitutional reforms.  

Gustavo Manuel de Arístegui stated that Spanish delegation will visit Georgia with broaden membership in October. According to him, that will support relationship between two countries and Spain will continue support to Georgia in the international arena.
