Bidzina Gegidze’s press-conference on urban development of Zhvania Street in Tbilisi

The Chair of the Faction “Georgian Dream – for Powerful Georgia”, Bidzina Gegidze, the Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences and Seismic Monitoring Center, Tea Godoladze and the Zhvania Street residents held the joint press-conference in the Parliament on “Activities against Life-Threatening Urban Development at Zhvania Street and the Outcomes”.

The organizers responded to the decision of Tbilisi Mayor on prohibition of issue of the construction permits at the Street: “It is a positive decision we do value. 1.5 years ago, the Bureau of Vake Single Mandate MP and the Faction started to strive to solve this problem and the process aimed at the result we witnessed in capacity of the decision yesterday”, - B. Gegidze noted.

During this time, in cooperation with the Earth Sciences Center experts and the Director, they held the intensive survey of the Varaziskhevi landscape, namely Zhvania Street and the adjacent massive and chaotic constructions which pose the threat not only to the local residents but the city in total. The surveys revealed that the constructions shall be immediately prohibited on this territory and especially the right slope.

Numerous meetings have been held with Supervision and Architecture Service and Tbilservice Group, as well as other state agencies. The invitees were the experts from Canada Commission on Construction Regulations and the US Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. They introduced their vision on threats of the wide-scale urban constructions.

Ultimately, the City Hall has held the survey revealing the same results as the Earth Center.

The City Hall has made an important decision to restrict construction on this territory. “Now, we enjoy our victory which is precedential – the decision is made for safe life of the Street citizens and the constructions have been terminated. It is an important fact, especially that today, it is the 4th anniversary of that terrible tragedy in Tbilisi – flood in Vere Gorge resulted from the mistakes in urban plan and chaotic constructions. It will never happen again! Tbilisi shall be a safe city”, - he noted.

He thanked the Earth Center, Street residents, MP Bureau and the Faction for their intensive fight.

He also thanked the executive authority and the City Hall noting that the fight is not over and now, they are to attach their attention to Vere Gorge.
