Maia Bitadze: Georgia plays a pivotal role in facilitating the connectivity of the energy markets of Europe and Asia

“Georgia plays a pivotal role in facilitating the connectivity of the energy markets of Europe and Asia, including the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project, which is especially noteworthy since it is to connect the energy systems of Europe and Georgia and facilitate the European energy security”, - Maia Bitadze, the Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee underlined in her address at the Energy Community Parliamentary Plenum in Brussels.
The speaker addressed the attendees, discussing the prospects of integrating renewable energy and Georgia’s strategic policy to upgrade its energy sector to renewable energy as a means of advancing its EU integration.
“Georgia, as a nation with a remarkable capacity and potential for renewable energy production, consistently undertakes initiatives to align its national energy policy with European Union legislation and standards. Notably, the National Energy and Climate Integrated Plan, adopted by the Parliament in 2024, outlines comprehensive plans for 2030, encompassing the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, the acceleration of renewable energy adoption, and the seamless integration of energy systems”, - she stressed.
According to her, Georgia’s aspirations to address climate change challenges are being strengthened. The nation’s plans for 2025 include the revision of its national contributions and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions by 47% as of 2030. In this regard, Georgia implements the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system to ensure transparent emission recording within a specific sector and facilitates emission trade with the European Union.
As per her information, the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee actively develops the Law on Climate Change to ensure the attainment of the climate-neutral goal by 2050.
The Energy Community Parliamentary Plenum was as well attended by the Chair of the Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee, Shota Berekashvili.
Georgia accessed the Energy Community as a full-fledged member on July 1, 2017, and undertakes respective reforms in active cooperation with the Energy Community Secretariat. It is noteworthy that in 2025, Georgia is the Energy Community presiding country
