Parliament Endorsing Draft Law on DNA Database

The Parliament has reviewed and approved the draft law on the DNA Database in the third reading, with 84 votes in favor.
The proposed legislation defines the foundations and conditions for the creation and operation of the DNA database. Its primary objective is to facilitate crime prevention, detection, and investigation through the storage of genetic profiles, as well as to support the identification of missing persons.
The draft law establishes regulations concerning individuals subject to biological sample profiling, procedures for sample collection and re-collection, fundamental rules for managing the DNA database, as well as the storage and destruction of biological samples and genetic profiles.
According to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, the law will come into effect on June 1, 2025.
