The Draft Law on Pet Animals adopted for the I reading

The Parliament discussed for the I reading the Draft Law on Pet Animals and adopted it with 83 votes.
“One of the novelties introduced to the Law envisages the universal identification and registration of pets to guarantee the prevention of their dumping”, - Maia Bitadze stated.
According to her, the Draft Law introduces mandatory sterilization and castration of pets born after the effective date of the Law, however, with certain exceptions. The Bill also prohibits the uncontrolled breeding of dogs, and admits solely the doghomes registered in an order established under the law.
Furthermore, the legal package envisages the prevention of the pet hyperpopulation, specifically, the authority of the Government to declare a moratorium on the breeding of certain species of dogs. The Bill also forbids abandoning pets and establishes a stringent liability for cruelty against pets; a uniform e-base shall be established with installed novel control instruments.
