Parliament Supported Amendments to the Law on Higher Education

The Parliament of Georgia considered and adopted, at its III reading, amendments to the Law of Georgia on Higher Education, supporting the bill with 73 votes. The draft law was presented at the plenary session by Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth.
According to the amendments, a document certifying the completion of a higher education programme by a student enrolled before 1 September 2010 in accordance with Georgian legislation, and issued by a higher education institution that was licensed or deemed licensed by law, will be recognised by the State regardless of the institution’s accreditation status.
In addition, the State will recognise documents certifying the completion of a higher education programme by persons enrolled before 2005, provided that the document was issued by a higher education institution that held a licence for higher educational activities at the time the qualification was awarded.
Furthermore, a higher education diploma issued upon completion of a single-cycle higher education programme before 1 September 2010 will be considered equivalent to a Master’s degree diploma, except in cases where the diploma explicitly states that the graduate was awarded a Bachelor’s degree.
