MPs Attend Unveiling of Monument Honoring Georgian Soldiers on Texel Island and Meet with Georgian Diaspora

Members of the Defence and Security Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Zviad Shalamberidze and Greta Tsitsava, attended the unveiling ceremony of a monument dedicated to the memory of Georgian soldiers who heroically perished during the 1945 uprising on the Dutch island of Texel. The MPs also met with representatives of the Georgian diaspora in the Netherlands.

The idea to erect a monument at the Georgian cemetery on Texel was initiated and financially supported by Tinatin Svanidze-Vancko, founder of the Georgian Cultural Centre of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and President of the "Diaspora Alliance for Georgia" Foundation. The project was supported by Texel Municipality as well as the Dutch Ministries of Defence and Cultural Heritage.

The ceremony marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, as well as the 10th anniversary of the Georgian Cultural Centre in the Netherlands and the founding of the Elevation of the Holy Cross Church in Amsterdam.

The event was attended by representatives of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Service for Veterans Affairs, international delegations, Texel Municipality, local authorities, and descendants of those who fell during the Texel uprising.

A memorial service for the souls of the Georgian soldiers who died in the uprising was conducted by His Grace Bishop Dositheos (Bogveradze), head of the Georgian Orthodox Diocese of Belgium and the Netherlands.
