Maia Bitadze partaking in the sitting of the Committee on Energy Security within the EuroNest PA

Brussels hosted the sitting of the EuroNest PA Committee on Energy Security, co-chaired by the Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Georgian Parliament, Maia Bitadze and the MEP Anna Fotyga.

The Committee agenda included the energy infrastructure and energy security: legal approximation of the Eastern European candidate and partner countries with the EU energy laws and policy. M. Bitadze concentrated on the significance of coordinated cooperation in the region to ensure the energy security of Caucasus and EU member states.

She dwelt on the Georgia-Romania Black Sea Submarine Cabling and the importance of its effective implementation which is to boost energy security in Europe and the Caucasus region.

“The Russian aggression war in Ukraine and the energy embargo declared against Georgia in 2005-2013 once again evidenced the urgency of the energy independence from Russian resources. Georgia, being the EU candidate state and a member of the Energy Community, is developing the European energy and climate change legislation, striving to ensure sustainable development in line with the EU policy. This process comprises the intention of a green, fair transition as a key mechanism for the achievement of the energy security goals. Within the aforementioned period, Georgia has adopted 11 brand new laws on environmental protection and introduced over 200 amendments to the legal acts, adopted the notable new law on water resource management, the law on industrial emissions, the Forest Code etc. We have also developed the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to further coordinate sustainable economic, environmental and social development goals. It is as well noteworthy that the Parliament schedules to adopt the law on Climate Change in 2024”, - she stated.

At the end of the sitting, the Delegations, backed and actively participated by the Georgian Delegation, set out the draft issue for the next meeting – “Sustainable Future of EaP Countries Providing Evolving Paradigms of Energy Systems”.
