Nikoloz Samkharadze reviewing the security milieu with his Turkish counterpart

Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, met with his Turkish counterpart, Fuat Oktay.

The primary subject of the meeting was the security concerns and the ongoing conflicts in and near the region, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Iran conflict, and the developments in the Near East.

The parties underscored the principal role of Georgia and Turkey in the peaceful solution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. The two Chairs reviewed the political developments in Georgia and Turkey, as well as the bilateral relations and the trade and economic cooperation.

“It was an intriguing and opportune meeting with my Turkish counterpart. In addition to security concerns, we discussed the strengthening of our bilateral relations, the surge in trade volume, and the unparalleled advantages of the transit and logistics potential of the middle corridor. Our conversation encompassed the positive trajectory of our bilateral ties, which are clearly evident from the numerous visits we have already conducted within the current year, as well as the scheduled visits, including the visit of the President of Georgia to Turkey next month”, - N. Samkharadze noted.

He provided Mr. Oktay with an update on the situation in the occupied regions of Georgia and asked for his assistance in mediating with the newly formed Syrian government to secure the recall of the recognition of the so-called independence of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.

The parties deliberated on the cooperation prospects. The trilateral meeting of the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey is scheduled for the current year. N. Samkharadze invited his Turkish counterpart for the official visit to Tbilisi in 2026.
