The Bureau registering new legislative initiatives

Media and Society 24 თებერვალი 2025
The Bureau registering new legislative initiatives

The Bureau discussed new legislative initiatives and assigned the leading and mandatory Committees for their further consideration.

The Bureau also registered a new legal initiative titled “The Foreign Agent Registration Act,” which is a translated version of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), the legal act applicable in the United States. The legal initiative was authored by the Faction “Georgian Dream.”

“The crux of the legal initiative lies in its direct translation of the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FARA). Henceforth, upon parliamentary deliberations, the adherence of the respective terms to the national legislation shall be ensured. By submitting this legal initiative, all false and forged narratives disseminated within the country or beyond concerning the Georgian laws will cease. Correspondingly, it will dispel any speculations regarding the alleged adoption of the Law by the Parliament failing to comply with international standards”, - H.E. Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament, elucidated.

The legal initiative was assigned to the Legal Issues Committee for further deliberations.

According to Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Legal Committee, the team has made a political decision on the literal translation and initiation of the US Law to prevent confusion and vagueness about the document. As he elucidated, naturally, additional amendments shall be introduced to the legislation determining the bodies responsible for enforcing the Law, taking into account the current realities of Georgia.

The Bureau initiated the Bills: On Amendments to the Law on Countering Corruption; On Amendments to the Law on Broadcasting; On Amendments to the Law on Gender Equality; On Amendments to the Rules of Procedure; On Amendments to the Law on Public Service; On Amendments to the Criminal Code of Georgia.
