The Culture Committee Heard Information on the Implementation of Amendments to the Law on Copyright and Related Rights

The Culture Committee heard information regarding the implementation of amendments made to the Law on Copyright and Related Rights.

During the meeting, the Chair of the Board of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPOA), Tamar Gvarishvili, spoke about the key changes introduced in the law as part of the reform. According to her, the amendments improved the system for collecting and distributing royalties and introduced a mechanism for collecting royalties for “private copying”.

The reporter also discussed the activities of the association and introduced statistics regarding the dynamics of royalty collection. Tamar Gvarishvili noted that, on the initiative of IPOA and by decision of its General Assembly, the “MESMA” Foundation was established to promote the development of culture. She also informed the committee that in May 2026, the association plans to participate in the General Assembly of SCAPR, and in June in the conference of CISAC.

At the committee meeting, the Head of the Legal Department of the IPOA, Lasha Mdivani, spoke about issues related to artificial intelligence in the field of intellectual property and possible ways to address them.

Challenges in the field of copyright and the development of the sector were also discussed by the Chairperson of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (Sakpatenti), Soso Giorgadze.

During the meeting, it was noted that artificial intelligence presents a significant challenge in the field of intellectual property, not only in Georgia but worldwide, and that strengthening efforts in this direction is important.
