Statement by the Chairman of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili

Statement 15 Sep 2022

Pursuant to the Constitution of Georgia, Organic Law of Georgia on Public Defender, Rules of Procedure of the Parliament of Georgia, and the decree of the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia N 1/415/22 of September 14, 2022, on the Approval of the Rule of Submission of Candidates of Public Defender of Georgian for 2022 to the Parliament of Georgia:

The process of choosing candidates for Public Defender of Georgia by the Parliament of Georgia will commence on September 15, 2022.

In accordance with the first paragraph of Article 35 of the Constitution of Georgia and the first paragraph of Article 6 and the third paragraph of Article 7 of the Organic Law of Georgia on the Public Defender of Georgia:

a) A new Public Defender of Georgia shall be a citizen of Georgia;

b) Election of the same candidate for the position of the Public Defender of Georgia two times in a row is prohibited.

Applications of persons wishing to be nominated as a candidate for the Public Defender of Georgia (hereafter - candidate) will be accepted until September 29, 2022.

The candidate's application must include the candidate's name and surname, education, scientific degree (if any), workplace and position, contact address, and phone number. This statement must be signed by the candidate. It should be accompanied by:

a) A copy of the identity card or passport of a citizen of Georgia;

b) Copies of educational documents;

c) Candidate's autobiography (CV);

d) Additional documents confirming practical experience in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms, at the discretion of the candidate.

By submitting the application, the candidate grants permission for information to be obtained about them and for their personal data to be processed in accordance with the decree N 1/415/22 of the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia dated September 14, 2022, which approved the procedure for submitting candidates to the Parliament for the position of Public Defender for the year 2022.

The application shall be filed in the name of the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, in writing, at the following address: Rustaveli Avenue No. 8, Tbilisi, or at the e-mail address: [email protected].
