Shota Khabareli: the annulment of the University of Sports by the preceding Government was a huge mistake

Shota Khabareli: the annulment of the University of Sports by the preceding Government was a huge mistake

“It was unprecedented to start the report with sports. I, a former athlete, was very glad as sports was always mentioned in the speeches of the Minister”, - the Majority MP, Shota Khabareli stated at the plenary session about the Education Minister, Tea Tsulukiani.

According to him, the Minister touched upon many important issues on sports, including the University of Sports.

“The preceding Government decided that the University of Sports was not necessary and annulled it. It was a huge mistake. Today, when we speak the engagement in sports, it takes the source from that very moment. The number of persons engaged in sports was reduced from 350 000 to 30 000 and it was a great tragedy. Today, we speak about the highest progress in sports even against the challenges, including in mass sports and I am glad to see the new Department of Sports set up in the Ministry”, - he stated.

The Government shall find a way to engage the future generation in sports. The Sports Federations also encounter problems.

“For years, we speak about the agreements with the Federations beneficial for both sides, the current regulations, which are not sufficient, shall be revised. The steps you take are good, they lead to the progress”, - he added.
