The President of the National Handball Federation reporting to the Sports Committee

The Sports Committee heard the activity report of the National Handball Federation for 2023 and the plans for 2024.

“2023 was a successful year for the Georgian handball. The Georgian team for the first time reached the Final of the European Championship and the team members earned high approvals”, - the President of the Federation, Vakhtang Meipariani stated.

According to him, the slogan of the Federation is “Live with Handball”, in view of which the Federation undertakes special programs for the promotion of various sports types for diverse age groups. As the reporter noted, the kindergartens enjoy the “fun handball” workshops and training and as a result of 20 training seminars within the school programs, 400 pedagogues of up to 250 schools have been re-qualified, and 200 pedagogues were granted the international license.

As for the Georgian Championship, 6 Championships were held countrywide in various age categories.

“2023 was a special year for the Boys U19 Team. After winning the Europe Nations Cup of 2022, the Team played at the Intercontinental Cup in Costa Rica in March 2023, defeating the teams of Tahiti, Nigeria and Nicaragua and reached the Final of the World Championship”, - he stated.

The President of the Federation overviewed the further plans underlining the importance of the European and World Championship qualifying matches and invited the Committee members to the Georgia-Austria match on May 9. Speaking about the challenges that the Federation encounters, the reporter noted that the provision of the Federation with due financing, sports infrastructure and training bases is a necessity.

The Chair of the Committee, Irakli Medzmariashvili thanked the reporter and his team for the submitted information and the activity of the Federation and congratulated him on the title of the Team of the Year for 2023 rated by the Sports Journalists’ Association. According to him, the handball, with due support, will be further developed to raise many successful players.

“Despite the increased financing of the Federation from the State Budget year over year, more assets shall be allocated to facilitate the domestic championships and ensure accessibility to the handball games”, - I. Medzmariashvili noted.
