Meeting of Anri Okhanashvili and Tengiz Sharmanashvili with the OSCE/ODIHR Director

Parliamentary majority 23 May 2024
Meeting of Anri Okhanashvili and Tengiz Sharmanashvili with the OSCE/ODIHR Director

The Majority MPs, Anri Okhanashvili and Tengiz Sharmanashvili met with the OSCE/ODIHR Director, Matteo Mecacci.

The parties discussed the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence. As the Chair of the Legal Issues Committee, A. Okhanashvili stated, the Majority MPs introduced detailed information about the process starting from the initiation of the Law up to its adoption.

“We underlined that the radical opposition did not even want to participate in the consideration. We introduced lots of key aspects about the starting point of this process by the opposition with the acts of violence against the Majority Leader; we overviewed how they refused to get engaged in the discussion about this issue after we had offered the dialogue with the representatives of our partner countries, how they refused to give an opportunity to the youth to have a conversation with the Prime Minister and the fact that the President never submitted any alternative versions. If she disliked these issues believing that they could not be corrected or eliminated, then why did they never introduce an American model, even if it would be alleviated, or why did they not introduce a French model, Israeli model or a model of the directives initiated to the EU. If they were considering this project incorrigible and were unable to correct it, they enjoyed a right to introduce an exact translation with certain modifications and customized for our reality. It means their unwillingness to have the activity of NGOs in Georgia transparent, no other explanation can be found”, - he stated.
